Hi-Tech, IT, Software, Technology, Telecommunication, Mobile, Computer, what do these words mean to you? What do they mean to the largest corporations that invest, build, and ultimately profit in these categories and on these platforms? And, what role do developers have, in relation to these corporations?
What role do developers have, in relation to these corporations?
I've been developing web sites and web applications for a while now, I still think I have much to learn, but I do consider myself a developer, hell on a good day even a programmer! But I don't know how much support I'm getting from the 'giants' that I look up to, build on, and build for!
I have attached three images to this blog post. One is of Microsoft's front page, the other is of Apple's front page and the thirds (and my favourite) is of Canonical's (also known as Ubuntu) front page.
Notice anything? Yeah, me neither... My point is: what do we, developers and programmer, mean to these companies?
I often find myself, while working, needing to find some piece of documentation or resource that directly relates to any of these three companies, and of course others, but let's stick to these ones for simplicity's sake. Which one one of these three companies, would you say, understands the importance of developers to its future? I'll help you, the first one. You know why? I can access anything related to development on that platform from the front page, and I don't even have to try hard.
So, I pose a question to Apple and Ubuntu: Where is your big, obvious and purple button that you can be proud to show off to those whose blood, tears, and sweat, your existence depends on?
